I dunno... seems once the months were put on, anything that would "hang" from the holes would cover up the days and months. So why would they be clumped together?

If I were to guess, my best guess would be that it covered a favorite "starter" container that either had a protrusion or handle thingy..(big holes)and that some sort of needle or clip marker was woven through those holes..(small holes) maybe a special stir stick.

Ahhh a Christmas mystery...

wow, I don't know why I didn't see it! It makes perfect sense and yes! I'm sure you're right, a perpetual calender. I had one expert tell me 'something kitchen' and one tell me something for keeping fruit in...like a ripener. Which made no sense because the only holes are the little ones in the front - I don't know why I never asked here! I had an answer right away!

perpetual calendar, made in about the 1970s and I bet the whole thing could be held to a fridge with magnets inside the backing......you are missing the numbers for the days and I bet someone made it as a gift and it was a christmas gift! how appropriate for this time of year!

ps I am no expert, just had a gramma that made lots of crossstitched stuff and recognize the x markings as something she would do on pillow cases and make them into other things, like table runners, wall hangings and gifts!

Its a hand towel. The openings are for you to slid it on a rod to hang. You leave a dirty fingerprint under each of the days until then you hit Saturday and you know its time to wash it.
The strips with the months on them are purely for entertainment purposes.

I agree, too. A calendar holder. Actually, my grandmother used to have one sort of like this, with the four holes to hold the year and months. Didn't have all that nice hand stitching, though. Yours is really lovely!

I too think it is a wall calendar. I think the months can be displayed in the smaller two holes - - - only let the current month show. And I bet it is missing strips with numbers that could be displayed one at a time for the date out of the larger holes.

There were lots of cloth calendars in the 50's and 60's - - - most of them were printed and couldn't be changed from year to year.

There were also little wooden calendars that COULD be changed, similar to what you have here. I imagine someone made a "sampler" of sorts - - - this being it - - - and made it as a changeable calendar.

I've never seen anything like this either. Bu I agree with Jen, it's a perpetual calendar. In the little slot goes the piece of paper with the months ( adjust as the months go by). In the larger buttonholes goes a printed monthly calendar. Maybe all the pages were used up. yes, you could certainly print your own on the computer.

Looks like a calendar. The months probably go in the small openings above the SMTWTFS (days of the week) and there should be larger inserts for the larger openings with the main portion of the calendar. That's probably something you could create, have something printed and laminated.
