Too Dirty for Words Small Organizing Project #2 - Costume Jewelry

Moving on to another small organizing project now that I'm fairly sure the first one (my purse) was a success.   I've maintained an ordered purse going on two weeks now which is amazing.

This is a slower way to organize, and different, then anything I've ever done before but if it works it will be lead to permanent solutions.   The time it takes to get everything done will be worth it if the solutions get me to long-term maintaining, not just making things look better until guests leave.

If you know what I mean.

I looked around the house for another small thing that annoys me consistently and picked costume jewelry.  My jewelry collection isn't that big but it was everywhere.  I had it stashed in several rooms and in multiple places within those rooms.  I had it in bowls, drawers, a jewelry box, Filofax boxes, and in clothing pockets.

Finding what I needed - even knowing what I had - was such a  pain I didn't wear much. A shame really since I love most of it.

Taking into account the rules I'd made so far....

My how to be neat rules:

1.  If something isn't working, take the time to assess why before organizing it.
2.  Put things back where they came from.

I looked around for a solution and found one to hang in my closet.

Hanging Jewelry Organizer works for me because it separates everything, holds all I have (although if I ever buy more I can certainly get another), takes up very little space in the closet and is exactly where I pick out my clothes - So finding what will work with what outfit is easy - and it's really easy to put things away.  Honestly, if things are hard to put away, I don't.  Sad but true.  I'm looking for honest solutions here, things I know that will work with my flaws, not against them.

I'm adding another how to be neat rule this week to the two I have.

1.  If something isn't working, take the time to assess why before organizing it.
2.  Put things back where they came from.
3.  Store things where you use them.

If anyone wants to join in send me a link to your project and I will add it to my next Too Dirty for Words post.

We used to collect cheap costume jewelry and decorate trees in the neighborhood with it.

That's a great idea Josh! I see it at sales all the time!

I love this idea. My problem (aside from the clutter problem) is that if I can't see it, I don't remember that I have it. I saw one of those cute jewelery organizers in TJ Maxx just the other day and I'm going right over there to get it. Such a good excuse to buy something new.

Susan, Exactly! That's just the way I am. It's so frustrating - Not knowing what I have. It's a daily problem and costs me money because I'm forever rebuying the same things either I don't remember I bought it or I can't find the 9 I have!
