Home made filofax inserts

I decided to try making some A5  inserts, since I use graph paper for almost everything I started there.

Most of my writing is done on To-Do sheets so I made some to-do formats and added a old-fashioned typewriter graphic that I made from a photograph.

The paper is just regular, awful printer paper.

Which definitely blows chunks...

But I do like the pages.

For the life of me, I can't get them to print two to a page and on both sides.  Been trying for days and I'm beyond frustrated, depressed about my lack of ability and oh! So very done.

I'm considering taking the images to a printer so I don't have to go on Zoloft over my lack of printing skills.  If you click the images you will get the full size (or I can email you the .jpg file) and if you can make them print right, I'd love to know how...

And I'd be oh! So grateful to know how...

My kid's been going to college...

My son starts college again soon.  That might not seem like a big deal but it really is.  He wasn't a natural student and, for sure, didn't learn the way schools teach.  About mid-way through high school he decided to attend a Luthier Apprenticeship to learn guitar repair and not go to college.

Most people didn't think that was a good idea but for him it was perfect for many, many reasons.  I thought it odd that I had to visit his guidance counselor because of his decision; they didn't think it was a good idea most of all.

He went through the apprenticeship, living away from home for a year, and started working full time.  After six months of work he was ready to go back to school.

He's an English Major which was totally unforeseeable, he was tutored in English starting in the forth grade and is achieving near a 4.0 average.    He's also written one middle school novel (and is seeking publication), is working on a second and has quite a portfolio of poetry.

I wanted to get something special for him.

I bought him a Midori Bullet Pencil at Jet Pens, had it engraved with his initials and picked up a Kokuyo  Campus Paracuruno Slanted Page Notebook while I was at it.  The process of writing isn't easy for him, mechanically, and I thought the A5 size and smooth paper (along with the pencil) would make note taking easier.

There are cheaper pencils and paper for school but I wanted him to know how proud I am and hopefully using quality items will make 'the work' of school easier for him - In all ways.  When I thought about it, I don't want to write on a 35 cent notebook - Why would he?  And what a great way to let him know I take what he's doing seriously.

What follows is my original posting from 2009 called, My kid's not going to college.

My kid’s not going to college used to be a hard sentence to get out. My friends were all about where their kids applied, who they'd heard from and where their kids were going. When they asked me I was honest, “My son’s not going to college.”

My son's always had other plans.

My son is in a luthier apprenticeship.  Don’t feel bad if you don’t know what that means; spell check doesn’t either.  A luthier is someone who makes or repairs stringed instruments; in my son’s case, guitars.  My son has been all about guitars since he was twelve, probably.  I say probably because I’m not sure.

I wasn’t paying attention. I was too busy driving us both crazy and spinning my mommy-wheels trying to get him to do my version of  applying himself.

In fact I was so busy I missed that he already was applying himself.

While I nagged constantly about school-sponsored clubs and intramural sports – Anything that would look good on a college transcript; he taught himself to play the guitar and happily pursued his dream.

Without me…

I hope my son continues learning, always.  I hope this program renews in him what an education is; engaging, interesting and applicable to his life.

But the real education here was mine.  What is it we say as parents?   I don’t care what you do as long as you’re happy.  There are a million, million versions of that phrase and for how many of them do we add a but and change the whole meaning because we know better?

I only want you to be happy but a college education is…  Whatever makes you happy makes me happy but there is no future in… I don’t care what you do as long as you’re happy but that job won’t…

At some point it’s time to just let those words stand without the but because that's how they are right. And back when we wanted to be artists, and writers, and ballerinas...and joyful, we knew that.

So, whatever makes you happy, makes me happy.

Rock on, Baby.  Rock on.

Another dose of filofax enabling...

Can't help myself.

Listing states 'early 1980s '3CL' original leather filofax.' It definitely could be that age; it has the older rings and I don't recall any dark olive leather binders recently. It's at £2.20 currently. Plus it comes with some older inserts which I find very intriguing!

 Sounds like a steal!

Looks like maybe a Pink Pocket Finsbury  (You think?) and I'm such a sucker for pink...

I haven't a clue what this 'rare gold' filofax is.  It's listed on Ebay Australia but shipping is 4 times the asking price so I won't be finding out.  Interesting though...

Aspinal of London is just.... Beautiful!  I can't tell what size this is or if it fits Filofax brand inserts but it's lovely and I think around $200 new.  No US shipping so I'm not bidding but I might have....

The Filofax mini doesn't work for a lot of people so there are usually good deals on them.  This one is £0.99 so far.

Ditto the A4...

This Finsbury is currently at £2.70

Filofax rides shotgun...

My USE IT OR LOSE IT policy is moving along nicely; I've decluttered a lot of  items but oh!  There are  some things I have trouble with.

Clutter-Crushes I call them and they seem  impossible to let go of. I suppose if I didn't get emotionally attached to things I wouldn't be in this predicament in the first place but it is what it is.

My Filofax Portland is a major clutter-crush...

There's something so comforting about His Royal Squishiness.  It's the perfect soft leather and squeezing it gives me an endorphin rush.  I hasn't worked for me ever (the size, really)  but I still can't break up with it.

Over the week-end I decided to clean my car.   I'd been putting it off because the heat and humidity in New Jersey makes going outside unpleasant.  But Saturday I realized I have a seven passenger van only one person could fit into and screamed, Enough!

While I was back-hoing the van, I thought I needed a home for car related stuff; registration and insurance mostly.  Since I've been looking for solutions to homeless items and trying to find new uses for things I already had, I remembered something else.   I have a GPS but frequently don't have addresses I need.

That's when it hit me; I could put all of that into His Royal Squishiness!   The front side has a gusseted zip pocket perfect for car documents...

Gusseted pockets are the bomb...

The back side has a big slip pockets for letter writing supplies and smaller pockets that would work for credit cards, hotel room keys, photos...  At the moment I just have the little inserts that come with filofaxes (I have a clutter-crush on them too).

I put in three sections...

Car expenses...

Addresses I use repeatedly..

And addresses for thrift shops I want to try.  I never remember where the darned things are located when I'm out and about...

car filofax

And vacation ideas.   I go to Cape May, New Jersey twice a year and tend to do the same things every time.  The last few times I've tried to find something new to explore but forget where I wanted to go once I'm there.  Now I have a space to write it down.

I also have a place to keep all the post cards I collect.

Eventually, I'll run out of room for these but...

For now, it's perfect!

I also added a few (CUTE!) bags for receipts...

I put the Midori Traveler's stickers in there because they seem well suited for a rambling on the go Filofax.

And I've also got a fair number of zip envelopes and card inserts too because there is no end to the stuff I want to keep.

car filofax

Apparently.

So there you have it, my Car Filofax!  A home for all things car and travel related and it all started with a van full of, well... full.   I dreaded cleaning that thing but in the end I took Albert Einstein's advice on clutter... Out of clutter, find simplicity.

He as so right!

And look how happy His Royal Squishiness is riding shotgun as I tool around New Jersey.
