Vintage egg cups, Cape May NJ

I love the way Melmac looks so whenever I see it, I buy it.

It's not expensive and I can't help myself.

I always end up selling it.

Melmac is a Melamine resin and while pretty,  it scratches (and is NOT microwave/dishwasher safe). It was very popular in the 1950's and into the 60's.  Towards the end of the 60's sales declined as it stains and scratches.

Coffee will stain and soften it, dishwashers fade it and some of it has a formaldehyde component. Pretty as it is, formaldehyde is a very unappetizing ingredient in anything to do with food .

But it sure is attractive.

Many companies made it because it was very popular in the 1940's to the 70's.

It didn't break.

And it was cheap to produce and buy.

I don't see much Melmac around here - I remember having bowls at home....

I try to grab all the plates I can in the Melmac. They are inexpensive at garage sales and I use them to put cakes on when giving them away (ie cake sale for church). Makes it look a lil better than that foil on cardboard!
