Looking backwards to go forward

Philofaxy's  post today includes files for LOTS of  (different sized) printable 2013 diary inserts; definitely check it out (if you haven't already). I'm so glad this is available, you can never have too many insert options, especially free ones.

Seeing it this morning reminded me of a post I've meant to do for ages.

Calendar years repeat. I  read (in a book on tight-wadding),  thrifty people save calendars  - Reusing them when the year repeats.  The dates of Holidays won't match but that's an easy fix.

I love old diarys, letters, and planners. All can be had for very little money  (estate sales, garage sales, thrift shops and  on Etsy or Ebay though the price will be much higher).  In the 40's, 50's and 60's a lot of companies put out branded agendas as advertising and for whatever reason, people keep them.

I have a few,  unused or hardly used.  I like the semi-used ones personally - It gives the pages some history.  Looking through them a few months ago reminded me about the years-repeating thing and I thought, cut and punched they would make great Filofax inserts.

The year repeats for 2012 are:

  • 1928
  • 1956
  • 1984

And for 2013:
  • 1901
  • 1907
  • 1918
  • 1929
  • 1935
  • 1946
  • 1957
  • 1963
  • 1974
  • 1985
  • 1991
  • 2002
Most of mine are roughly A5 size give or take a schoochy bit. Since companies put out whatever they thought would define their image, they come in all sizes and configurations; from teeny all the way up to full-on desk size.

Most are spiral bound with a leather(ish) cover.  If you take out the pages, cut off the spiral edge, and punch them you've got one-of-a-kind, upcycled Filofax calendar inserts, at very little cost, that will make you the  envy of all  Filofolk within a hundred miles...

Okay, I'm assuming the envy part, maybe it's just me.

An added bonus: Since fountain pens were  used more frequently back then, the paper tends to be fountain pen friendly.

Rock your old calendars, they will love you for it.

Sandra, You're so sweet! Thank you, I'm just looking for fun additions that are reasonably priced - At sales I've paid almost nothing for these kinds of things - and it would add a nice character - I don't have a year I can use so I'm not doing this but would if I could!

Thanks so much, Laurie! (It's fun too!)

I love it! As a result of reading this, I'm about to set someone at Dodo Towers the task of checking which of our 47 editions so far since 1966 repeat themselves! Maybe for our 50th anniversary edition we will reuse/adapt an old Dodo Pad. Good thinking Tracy - you've seeded an idea in my mind....!

(Is there an easy way of checking do you know?)

Neat idea, Tracy, and I laughed at the envy comment because its true!
