V for Ventura

Ventura's got a follow up appointment today for the pin he had removed from his back leg.  He seems better and will put weight on that leg but I think this will probably remain an issue;  maybe even lifelong.  Could be because of the type break or maybe because the break (seems to have) occurred in February but wasn't treated until late May, dunno.

I don't really know what happened to him before Greyhound Friends of NJ had him.  I do know they took him right to a vet for some long-overdue surgery.

Retired greyhounds can  come with an issue or two plus most have nicks and scuffs.  See the black "V" on his side?

venturas scar

It's a pretty big scar.

People ask me about it, I say it's V for Ventura.

During his first vet exam the vet found a few more; one on his lower abdomen with staple scars, must have been a bad one.

I want to see if there's something I can do for his leg, long term so I'm going to take him to the Physical Therapy Department at NorthStar VETS for an evaluation.  He walks on it if he's going at a slow pace but anything more and he hops on three legs.  It also seems stiff in the morning, at night and I think there's more stiffness with the cooler weather.  I want to make sure I'm not doing anything wrong either.  I don't know, maybe I walk him too much...  Or not enough.

If he can have less pain I'd like that for him.  He's been through enough.

These days he's mostly into comfort and his hobby is pillow collecting.    It's not like he doesn't have enough of his own dog beds because he has four; two in the living room alone.  But a guy's got to have a pillow for his head after all.

No matter how big the beds are...  I don't know...

I need a bigger dog bed

His head is always overboard so he's taken to dragging extra pillows over.

Oh and PS, I totally found another dog bed I want to get him!

Because I think he would love laying in a dog bed that is a pillow, right?

It's from Drs. Foster and Smith and it's called a Ball Bed.  And not only do I want a giant one for Ventura but I know Ginger would love a teeny, tiny one ....  And if they ever make a people size one, I'm getting it.

World War II Letters: Soldier to his Sweetheart

A few Saturday's ago I was making a bee-line to the grocery store until I saw a homemade 'Estate Sale' sign. I've posted multiple times about how soured on sales I've become but I'm willing to take a shot at a sale that looks 'non-commercial' - Like something the family is giving.

This was one of those.  Nothing high-end in the house in the sense that a dealer would want to come but it was priceless and so interesting to me;  they even said take what you want from the house itself (windows, cabinet doors... ) it was going to be torn down.  It looked like it needed to be and I walked very gently up and down the stairs, believe me.

I got very few things there but I love the things I got.  The clock in my Scaping the bottom of the barrel post came from that house and an old bottle or two and these...

soldier's letters

Upstairs in boxes there was a ton of random papers, mostly old bills and Jehovah's Witness handouts but because the couple were savers they had also saved letters.

The couple had been together for a very long time, so long that they wrote to each other when he was in World War II and she (Dorothy) saved all the letters.  Most of them were tied together with blue ribbon, grouped in some way.  Some letters have little post cards like the one in this picture, some I don't know because there are just so many I haven't really started looking through them.

I don't know why I bought them, I didn't know the people.  I've thought a lot about why since I brought them home and all I've come up with is she lovingly saved these letters over 70 years...  The thought of someone taking them and putting them in a dumpster with the rest of the garbage kind of hurt  in a way I can't explain.

I don't know what to do with them but I thought at least if I read them they would go on a little longer.

I've scanned one of the letters.

click them you will get larger images.

This postcard, blank on the back,  was with the letter.  I noticed he sent her postcards like this with some of the letters.

My family thinks this fascination of mine is flat out nutty but I had some friends over two nights ago who were as rapt as me by all this so since it's not just me...

I was thinking of including more letters in posts, what do you guys think?

Monstrous Barbie-like Pinkatude

There are a few things I routinely search for on eBay in the hopes I will find the deal of the century; a few I've even set up as auto-searches to come as daily emails.

If you don't know how to do it eBay has provided a link (green arrow) to make this as easy as gaining weight on a cruise (Read: No brainer).  You just fill in the search bar and when you get the set of results your happy with click the green link, a small window will come up asking if you want to save the search and have emails when new items are listed.

I'm talking about this because I've had a long standing Filofax search for... Oh... Ever I think.  I never found anything I wanted to buy because the Filofax I had, old as it is, is really nice.  And I only had one unlike almost ever other person who loves Filofaxes.

Filofax, charmed

The leather is soft, the thing lays flat, it's got to be twenty years old and just keeps getting better and better.  Most new Filo's look like they came from a dollar store (to me) and I know they look as good as they are ever going to look.

The new filo's are not going to age like wine...  They are going to age like...  like, I don't know.  Me.

I kept watching my Filo search on  eBay but all I saw was new Filofax organizers at no great bargain and some nice old ones but again, at no bargain.  And some - OUTRAGEOUSLY PRICED!

Until I saw this pink bit of love last week...

pocket filofax bloomsbury

I was looking for a large A5 binder but I just couldn't resist this pocket Bloomsbury.

Still in the box from France, never used and with a pen.

The leather is very nice and it will age well, I'm sure.

I can even use the 2005 calendar for the rest of this year because FYI...

Did you know you can reuse old calendar years sometimes because the dates/days match up periodically?  Here are some examples for 2011 and 2012

2011

 2005 1994 1983 1977 1966 1955 1949 1938 1927 1921 1910

2012

1984  1956  1928

This cost me $7.50 (+5 shipping US) and it was a crazy-amazing bargain!  I had to get it  and come up with something to use it for.  I've considered a few options already:

  • Address book
  • Menu planning
  • To-do list
  • Note pad for purse
  • Use it for my wallet
  • Books read/Books to read
  • General lists
  • Birthday/Holiday lists and planning
  • Blogging
  • Pet info

I'm leaning towards using it for my daily to-do list, menu planning, possibly the wallet and also and the gift planning.  It's totally up in  the air and I've not done a thing with it except gaze lovingly at it's Monstrous Barbie-like Pinkatude.

For now I'm satisfied with that.
