Second to the last how I got to Nutrisystem...

Sadly, I spent only 4 months on the old Nutrisystem plan.  While it was great for losing weight there was a flaw in the old program; one that is common in low carb diets.  The majority of fiber in the diet wasn't contained in the food, but in the boxes around the food.

*I want to jump ot the current version of Nutrisystem which is amazingly loaded with with fiber. Fibertasic, even.*

After four months on the old Nutrisystem diet I'd lost 40 plus pounds.  I have pictures of myself somewhere with both  legs down one side of pre-Nutrisystem pants.  (The pants I was told not to wear to work anymore.)

The lack of fiber wasn't just inconvenient for me though, it was a major hoopla - I kid you not - Think: Mega-Hemorrhoids.  And surgery.  But not a little out patient rubber band falala.  Think full-on several days inpatient, face down on an operation room table,  8 weeks out of work and many more sitting on a doughnut.

I had to quit Nutrisystem because I needed more fiber in my diet during recovery (and forever).   I was scared to death that I was going to gain everything back but a funny thing happened.

American Gothic to go

I replaced the other two toilets after the first one worked out so well.  That room hasn't seen a plunger since the installation so I surmised the problem was the actual toilet, not the actual me.

My new toilet....

is the toast of the house and all who enter want to use it.  I'm not even kidding.  I know that's crazy weird but it's true.

My son likens the new toilet to Audrey from Little Shop of Horrors.

...which made me laugh at first but now creeps me out because it's so true.

I don't want to pee at night anymore.

I'm waiting for the garbage truck as I write and crossing my fingers they will take pity on me and  haul this mess away.

It's worse from the front...

It was fun over the weekend.   We did a 21st century redeux of Grant Wood's American Gothic à la suburban New Jersey...

To go, right?

Nutrisystem Part 3

Here's  part three (part one is (here) and Part two is (here)  of my journey to (and back to) Nutrisystem version 2.0...11.

*Part 3 is sponsored by my right cankle; Nutrisystem doesn't know I'm writing these*

The first thing I did after joining Nutrisystem was buy new pants.

I started losing weight pretty fast; it wasn't noticeable for a while but the odd thing was, before I  lost a even single pound I was facing in another direction, metaphorically.  I think, making a commitment [to myself] was the first proactive thing I'd done in wow, I don't even know how long.  Just signing up broke the inertia that stopped me from moving forward.

As an aside about the pants - It was so long between pantings because ... (Can you not finish this thought yourself? )...    I didn't want to buy pants in a size 24 - didn't even want to try them on because what if they didn't fit? --  I was waiting to, let's all say it together.... Lose weight.

I wish I had tons of details about the first few weeks on the diet, but I really don't.  I was relieved to be done with binging.  But it was a real low point mentally; all I wanted to do was go three times a week, pee on the stick, get my food and go home.  I didn't do a lot of introspection, I ate the proscribed meals (didn't much care what they were) and yes, I was hungry a lot at first.

Over a month or so I lost enough for people to notice.  When I told them the kind of diet I was on everyone broke out their opinion because they all had a  neighbor who had a sister-in-law who had a cousin who had a mailman who's fat wife had done the exact same diet and gained back all the weight.  Plus she HATED the food and why not do the fill in the blank diet instead?

But for me it was working and working really well, my stomach was adjusting to  human portions, and I was starting deal with my life instead of eating my problems.  And as to the food back then,  it wasn't anywhere near as good as it is now.  Back then I ate a canned meat patty every night..

Last week, to cut to this time on Nutrisystem, I ate:

Nutrisystem Mushroom Risotto

Mushroom Risotto

Nutrisystem Swedish Meatballs with Pasta and Sauce

Swedish Meatballs

Nutrisystem Lunch

and a creamed broccoli filled egg white omelet for lunch

But even  though I wasn't crazy about the food back then I was learning a lot. What you eat on a diet isn't the be all end all...  I was resetting what I thought of a portion, visually. I was getting that I needed to eat at regular times.  That I could respond to hunger by eating and that I could be hungry and full;  I lost those things binging.

I was also learning that food is fuel and every meal didn't have to be a party; sometimes dinner is just dinner.   I learned that sometimes food is just good for me, not what I would serve at a party but nutrition.

More to come...
