V for Ventura

Ventura's got a follow up appointment today for the pin he had removed from his back leg.  He seems better and will put weight on that leg but I think this will probably remain an issue;  maybe even lifelong.  Could be because of the type break or maybe because the break (seems to have) occurred in February but wasn't treated until late May, dunno.

I don't really know what happened to him before Greyhound Friends of NJ had him.  I do know they took him right to a vet for some long-overdue surgery.

Retired greyhounds can  come with an issue or two plus most have nicks and scuffs.  See the black "V" on his side?

It's a pretty big scar.

People ask me about it, I say it's V for Ventura.

During his first vet exam the vet found a few more; one on his lower abdomen with staple scars, must have been a bad one.

I want to see if there's something I can do for his leg, long term so I'm going to take him to the Physical Therapy Department at NorthStar VETS for an evaluation.  He walks on it if he's going at a slow pace but anything more and he hops on three legs.  It also seems stiff in the morning, at night and I think there's more stiffness with the cooler weather.  I want to make sure I'm not doing anything wrong either.  I don't know, maybe I walk him too much...  Or not enough.

If he can have less pain I'd like that for him.  He's been through enough.

These days he's mostly into comfort and his hobby is pillow collecting.    It's not like he doesn't have enough of his own dog beds because he has four; two in the living room alone.  But a guy's got to have a pillow for his head after all.

No matter how big the beds are...  I don't know...

I need a bigger dog bed

His head is always overboard so he's taken to dragging extra pillows over.

Oh and PS, I totally found another dog bed I want to get him!

Because I think he would love laying in a dog bed that is a pillow, right?

It's from Drs. Foster and Smith and it's called a Ball Bed.  And not only do I want a giant one for Ventura but I know Ginger would love a teeny, tiny one ....  And if they ever make a people size one, I'm getting it.

You can adopt me too, I want this wonderful treatment ;]

My puppy broke her leg awhile ago and it was a long road to getting her recovered and she still has a weird gait. She isn't with me she was adopted when I moved but I assume she still has it since she had it for a couple years.

That dog bed is super cute.

Thank goodness you took Ventura in--can you imagine where he would be otherwise with that leg?? oh, I shudder to think of the life he led before. I hope you can get him to at least be more comfortable with that leg.

I have to have a pin in my toe to straighten it. Can you get me one of those pillow/bed things too?

It is so sad how they abuse those dogs at the race tracks. Then they just get rid of them when they can't run any longer. I had a friend that had a dog with the same problem. It takes a long time for recovery. Sometimes they still limp but the vet said after awhile it doesn't hurt any more. I think the rehab is an excellent idea. Ventura is lucky to have you.
