This explains why so many diets fail....

Wednesday I went from five days a week on Nutrisystem to seven  and noticed something about myself.   The first thing I did was say,

"Maybe I should take a day off before I really start..."

And I had to just stand there and think, really start?  I've lost 14 pounds,  haven't I already really  started?

Is this the kind of mess I do all the time, I wondered.  I did some math and figured out how many days I consider reasonable to stray from an eating plan every year because after all...

It's just a day here and there, right?

I'm taking my birthday off because well,  it's my birthday.  I don't need a reason. Plus how many days a year is your name written in frosting?

- 1 Day Off

And let's add a few days for family birthdays too; six should do it.

- 6 Days Off

There are 11 federal holidays and granted, they aren't all big eating holidays but they've tacked a lot of them onto weekends. Banks are not open on Federal Holidays, mail isn't delivered and diets do not start.  It's the law. (See weekends.)

- 11 Days Off

Plus - There are 28 other celebratory dates floating around the calendar.  The range from Arbor Day - And I've never broken out the grill on Arbor Day -  To Superbowl  Sunday which is about eating Nachos till you puke.  Didn't quite know what to do with  Leif Erikson Day; a holiday to swim and imitate Vikings - And some of the others.

I decided to count 25 of 'em.

- 25 Days Off

Weekends are holidayish too, Friday night to Sunday night is pretty much a free-for-all.  Admit it.  The Universal Diet rule is diets don't start till Monday morning (unless Monday is a Federal Holiday like Memorial Day when it falls under the Federal Holiday Rule).

 - 130 Days Off

I get 14 days off a year for Vacation because who diets on a Cruise?  And if I'm not going anywhere then Boo-Hoo on me I doubly get to eat because I'm stuck home painting the bathroom.

- 14 Days Off

The 24 hours after I weigh in is also free because, well there is no because - Everyone knows that.

-52 Days Off

I'm adding 2 days every month for impromptu invites of any kind that include food because for real, they all do.

-24 Days Off

And one day a month when I order take-out because I haven't planned well.

-12 Days Off

And I'm adding 24 more random days for unexpected bloating and bad moods that can only be helped by large quantities of crunchy, salty cheese wackadoodles. Followed by a chocolate chaser.

-24 Days Off

The calculation of how many days out of the total 365 days in a year I spend on my diet plan goes like this....

365 possible days on a diet

- 1 Birthday
- 6 Birthdays
- 11 Federal Holidays
- 25 Random Observances
- 130 Weekend Days
- 14 Vacation Days
- 52 Weigh In Days
- 24 Impromptu Days
- 12 Take Out Days
- 24 Cheesy Days
------------------------------------------------
66 days

In a nutshell -  For every year I've tried to lose weight I've been able to rationalize spending 299 days off my plan while considering myself on a diet.  I'm thinking this explains why so many diets  fail.  Who knew it was me all the time?

PS - I did not take a day off between going from the 5 day a week plan to the 7 day  plan.  Also please don't tell me if my math is wrong, it most likely is.  But the point will still be right...

*This post was written in memory of a zipper I killed last week trying to get into a pair of  cargo pants that looked big enough.  RIP, sweet cargo pants, you will be missed.   Nutrisystem is providing me with the food and program materials in exchange for blogging.*

Don't worry! Just read a report -animal testing -those on alternating fat food, slimming diet lived the longest!

I hear ya...I've been "dieting" for a few months. Every Friday I weigh myself, and then every weekend I rationalize a "last hurrah" of bad eating and then I'll 'really' get to work on Monday. Uh...yeah. Not working too well for me.

Wow. When you put it in those terms, it's pretty darn scary.

The place I work at is obsessed with parties. Criminy, we'll be sitting at one luncheon (with cakeS--plural) and they are planning the next. It kills me.

I have been brainwashed (in a good way) from all those years with Weight Watchers. I bring my own lunch and eat it while they are munching away on the high calorie crap. You'd be surprised on how many comments I get because of that! I mean, I'm not judging--they are! Sheesh.

I hadn't actually thought of it that way, this is a fabulous point. And a lot of days.

I don't think that is my problem. I think it is because I was taught not to use those 4-letter words! LOL
