The Crazy Suburban Mom: The Superbowl

The Superbowl

I've posted about my partner's mom, Mongo several times; that's a picture of her making notes in one of the community cookbooks she gave me.  When she moved to a nursing home they are one of the many things she gave up.  We used to pull them out on weekends and go through them. I hope that made her happy;  I know it made me happy.

Mongo passed away last night with her family around her.  She'd been in the hospital since Friday but then she'd been in the hospital most days since November.

Mongo really loved football.  Now, maybe it's hard to imagine an 81-year-old woman  tuning in to a Jets game but here's the thing: If you happened to be in a New Jersey nursing home during the last two years and heard a gray-haired lady cheering a two point conversion you just met Mongo.

She wanted to see the Jets play in the Superbowl but when they got knocked out she was rooting for The Green Bay Packers.

Mongo slept all of yesterday and finally we all left about five.

The game was on at home but to be honest I dozed on and off.  We were all pretty exhausted.  The thing is  after The Packers won, and I mean right after.  Not when they were getting The Lombardi Trophy but after the actual win was obvious to all and Gatorade was flowing Mongo's nurse called and said we should come in.

It was as if she waited... Or something.  I don't know how to explain it.  I know Green Bay had a lot of fans rooting for them last night but I think they might just have had a special one they knew nothing about.

Lovely post. I can't help think that you are right about GB having a very special fan last night.

Awww, Tracy! My heart goes out to your family for your loss. It sounds like she loved her life right thru the very last seconds of the game. :)

It timing never ceases to amaze me. It's like "OK, I'm done now." And then they just let go.
