The world's best meatloaf on Retro Tuesday

But let's go to a happier, less dark and meatloafy place first.  Wait, did I say the best meatloaf?  I think I meant the best meatloaf for Retro Tuesday which is a whole other ball of, um meatloaf.

So first, our happy place.  A place of lightness.

Of Melmac

pyrex ad

A place of Pyrex...

anchor hocking ad

and anchor-hocking.

A-a-a place of...

pep vitamins

Okay, I think we are going to the dark place now and you're ready for a meat loaf...

..that comes with a warning...

worlds best meat loaf4

never a good sign...

worlds best meat loaf1

But it had lots of 'come on'...

worlds best meat loaf

And here it is...

worlds best meat loaf2

And I really don't even know what to say about a cup of
mayo surrounded by 2 pounds of meat surrounded by hot beets except...

worlds best meat loaf3

So, yeah.  I guess that's a good way to describe it.

Oh my lord - what demented mind came up with that meatloaf recipe? Jeezum Crow that's nasty.

Vonlipi 5/11/10, 8:09 AM

That explains a lot! I'm so NOT a Miracle Whip person!
This post was 'piss in my pants funny'. Good job Tracy!

Ok, to be fair, a miracle whip binder makes as much sense as an egg to me? But, yeah.

The veering from happy place to the "Pep" dark place was a nice lil transition, heh!

Miracle Whip and Mayo take me to a very dark place! Eww big ball o meat plus can o lard plus...beets? Really? And top it with potatoes? Guess I will just have to take their word for it!

Maureen 5/11/10, 12:03 PM

The dishes are cool but the meatloaf! Barf-o-rama!

Petula 5/11/10, 3:54 PM

Uh... yea... hmmmm?... okay. :D

IludiumPhosdex 5/11/10, 5:05 PM

Wasn't Melmac the same planet a certain Gordon Shumway (as in the late 1980's sitcom ALF) came from?

Mimi 5/11/10, 5:07 PM

Great post! You know how much I love those nasty old recipes. They just make my heart flutter with joy!

J Sedai 5/11/10, 5:58 PM

I actually like beets, but pickled and cold, not hot. and growing up my mom would put mayo in the (instant) mashed potatoes (eww all around) makes my lil cooking self shudder in the horror or remembering! and that ad for vitamins? Oh my heck! I wanna make one that says "the more my husband spends time with the kids, the hotter he is!"

Lin 5/11/10, 7:43 PM

Isn't that potatoes on the top??? I don't know about adding Mayo to my meatloaf, that's sort of weird.

arief 5/12/10, 12:41 AM

mmmh...what a yummy... is it available in my country indonesia? wanna enjoy it with beloved wife...

Janiss 5/12/10, 1:13 AM

I had a hard time getting past that icky chauvinistic ad to the meatloaf recipe! Gawd, the attempts to brainwash our poor grandmothers. And seriously, were they expected to do all these domestic chores wearing pumps?

But yeah, uh, that "recipe." Well, it was not too bad, just sorta weird, until it got to the beets. That clinched it.

Lynette 5/12/10, 6:35 AM

ok you had me so happy.
melnac, pretty colors, retro life,
then 1950's cooking
blah and ugghhhh
now i sit and cry for all those kids who grew up with that...then they found McDonalds.....we wonder why they loved it so much?

jenn 5/12/10, 11:02 AM

As someone who is a little crazy and doesn't like my food touching, this would have driven me insane! lol!

Ruth 5/12/10, 12:31 PM

Ummm OK meatloaf made the normal way I can understand....

MAYO and BEETS??? Barfarama!

Postcardy 5/13/10, 11:49 AM

I love your old ads but I hate mayonnaise.

Postcardy 5/13/10, 11:51 AM

Oops, it was Miracle Whip--even worse than mayonnaise.

Coloradolady 5/13/10, 3:00 PM

Goodness....I so wonder how long this ad ran??? Does not even sound like a keeper to me!! Very interesting post however, so fun to read! Have a great VTT!

CC 5/13/10, 3:35 PM

I smiled all the way through this post. Ohh,how well I remember Melmac dishes and Pyrex is still a favorite to this day. I do believe I must pass on the meatloaf tho...I do so love meatloaf, just mot with mayonaise. Loved this post..

Love the vintage ads for shiny, happy things. I know I am in the very, very tiny minority here, but I would so eat that meatloaf AND the beets. Are you shaking your head in disbelief? LOL

Sally Annie Magundy 5/13/10, 5:06 PM

bwhahahahahhahaha! That's hysterical! Thanks so much for sharing, love the old ads and the scary recipes of my youth. :)

I may well be the only person that enjoyed beets as a child.

Happy VTT!

GardenofDaisies 5/13/10, 10:19 PM

Well, I love meatloaf, and I love beets and I love mayo too. I don't know about together though. LOL!!
I remember melmac very well. :-) Just saw some purple melmac at the antique store a week ago. It actually was really cute!

Gail @ Faithfulness Farm 5/13/10, 10:21 PM

LOL...what a fun post. I've never made meatloaf with Miracle Whip (yuck-o, lol) BUT I have made chocolate cake with it. That was my Mom's *secret* ingredient :)

~~Carol~~ 5/14/10, 2:17 PM

I would love to step into that ad for Melmac, and steal all of those plates! And grab that aqua pyrex dish with the gold starburst on it too. Love those old ads!
Happy VTT!

Sherrie 5/15/10, 12:26 AM
