How 'bout a heaping scoop of kitty litter cake? Yum...

kitty litter cake

Uh-huh,  a dessert.  Served in a litter pan...with a scoop.

That cup o' dirt with worms thing pales in comparison to the magnitude of serving edible kitty litter.  Believe me.  And I've served it to adults.

Now that's fun.

I posted about the  Kitty Litter Cake  at least once and  promised to post the recipe and today's the day.   I've made it a few times. Honestly, the kids look as horrified as the adults but eventually every takes a...um, scoop.

In case you have an odd sense of humor here is the original  recipe -- I did a few things differently and I noted those after.

KITTY LITTER CAKE
1 spice or German chocolate cake mix
1 white cake mix
1 large pkg vanilla instant pudding mix
1 pkg vanilla sandwich cookies
Green food coloring
12 small Tootsie Rolls
1 new (and definitely unused) kitty litter pan
1 new plastic kitty litter pan liner
1 new Pooper Scooper

Prepare cake mixes and bake according to directions (any size pans).

Prepare pudding mix and chill until ready to assemble.

Crumble white sandwich cookies in small batches in food processor, scraping often. Set aside all but about 1/4 cup.

To the 1/4 cup cookie crumbs, add a few drops green food coloring and mix using a fork or shake in a jar.

When cakes are cooled to room temperature, crumble into a large bowl. Toss with half the remaining white cookie crumbs and the chilled pudding. (Mix in just enough of the pudding to moisten it. You don't want it soggy. Combine gently).

Line new, clean kitty litter box.

Put mixture into litter box.

Put three unwrapped Tootsie rolls in a microwave safe dish and heat until soft and pliable.

Shape ends so they are no longer blunt, curving slightly. Repeat with 3 more Tootsie rolls and bury in mixture.

Sprinkle the other half of cookie crumbs over top.

Scatter the green cookie crumbs lightly over the top. (This is supposed to look like the chlorophyll in kitty litter.)

Heat 3 Tootsie Rolls in the microwave until almost melted.

Scrape them on top of the cake; sprinkle with cookie crumbs.

Spread remaining Tootsie Rolls over the top; take one and heat until pliable, hang it over the side of the kitty litter box, sprinkling it lightly with cookie crumbs.

Place the box on a newspaper and sprinkle a few of the cookie crumbs around.

Serve with a new pooper scooper.

In my experience with doing the recipe:

1. I used German chocolate cake mix and while it was YUMMY I found the color and look of the cake too dark. German chocolate cake mixes used to be a lighter color but no more... If I could have found spice cake mix (I couldn't) I might have used that, it would have had a much more 'sandy', litter-ish look. Although I don't know I really dislike spice cake .  My guess is the best option is to use a white cake mix and add a gray food coloring -- the professional stuff.

2. Pre-made pudding is easiest and the less pudding the better.  When I make this cake at home to bring  someplace I put everything in baggies and assembled it in the litter box when I arrive. It works best if assembled right before eating because the pudding will make it soggy if it sits too long.  What could be worse than eating soggy litter, right?

3. You can't have too many tootsie rolls. Surprisingly. The recipe doesn't call for nearly enough!

Well, that's the magic that is a kitty litter cake...

I'm with Crafty Notes--I'm not sure I could "dig" in. I've cleaned too many litter boxes in my day I guess. :)

I'm a kitty litter for real cleaner outer and this looks waaaay too real. I think I'd totally barf if this showed up at a party, even though the ingredients sound yummy. It just looks too real, man.

I've seen this before and I've always wanted to make it myself. But, like the other gals, not sure I could bring myself to eat it...

When I first looked at the photo I really thought that it was kitty litter. Then I read on and realized that it was a recipe. I am going to make this one day and eat it in front of the kids and not tell them what it really is. ;o)

I've seen this recipe a number of times, but I've never been able to stomach the thought of putting together a kitty litter cake. Maybe it's because I live with three indoor-only cats - it hits too close to home.

Oh dear God that looks awful... LOVE it!

Marie 4/15/10, 7:01 AM

So clever. But I am not sure I would be able to bring myself to sample it. lol However, I am keeping in mind for my grandson's birthday. I think he would get a kick out of it.

Grampy 4/15/10, 7:48 AM

That does look awful. I don't think I could get anyone around here to try it. It would however be interesting. A good April fools cake.

I saw this before. But don't know if I could ever bring myself to try that. - the imagery is too disturbing - lol!

One of my favorite desserts is dirt cake. But that surely is nothing compared to this kitty litter. This stuff looks SO nasty. lol But I bet it's yummy.

Too funny!
