I have to go to the bathroom on Retro Tuesday

retrotuesay stamp

A few weeks ago I got a House and Garden magazine, Feb 1955

house and garden magazine cover art feb 1 1955

And can't put it down. It's fabulous. I find a lot of magazines on eBay, it's where I get most of them; if you can pick this one up it's worth it. Most of the magazines I get are good but this one is just special. So, I'm back to this one because they had a feature on bathrooms... With color being the main focus...

And (wonderfully) most pictures were in color but because good design isn't only color...

Interestingly (and probably to drive this point home) the pictures about pattern and design were in black and white. I'm sure this was not noticed by many - I missed that point the first thousand times I looked at the magazine but I'm sure they did this on purpose.

And it's funny but when I decided to do this for Retro Tuesday I had to decide if I wanted to include the black and white pictures because I normally don't.

This one was called 'regency patterns'...

This one, 'related patterns'...

And this next one was the one I loved and
the main reason I included all of them.

And simply called 'contrasting patterns'...

And out of all the pictures both color, and black and white this one stands out to me. I'm pretty sure its the pattern on that shower curtain which I am picturing in black and copper. I would pay anything for it if I found it at an estate sale.

So Martin - Listen if you find that one let me know and um, I was kidding about paying....anything.

I think they would not have had the same impact had they not been black and white photographs. Do you agree about that?

But with a wave of my hand...

Bring on to the color...

Because I think it might be color that says

more than any other thing...

Although that last one's got some rockin' period patterns, I'll admit.

And because there is more to life than pink bathrooms, even though to some people saying that is sacrilege, here's a few other colors.

That could be so much later than the 50's.

To me that doesn't look dated at all and looks so much more modern than the 50's and doesn't have that moldy 70's vibe that gold can have and I can't seem to get passed. I like this a lot.

But because if given the choice I'd live in a world of blue and green...

Specifically atomic aqua and... Well, anything... but chartreuse is just perfection.

That one with the red and black floor is enormous! It's like a weird ballroom...

I find the style so....cold.

P.S. How's your finger?

mama- you and me!

Tara Ohhhhh! I'm getting back to avocado again. I think that might be bad.

Lidian - agree, its odd.

Maureen - I noticed that in other bathrooms too. Seems they leave them that way - maybe its all the tile they don't cover. I don't know but I've seen that a lot in bathroom features. Its like too much homey stuff covers up what the bathroom is about.

Fingers healing but is now getting numb with is an improvement - altho Im afraid it will stay that way.

I totally did not know that chartreuse + aqua works. Wow!

I'd take an atomic aqua bathroom ANYDAY! A pink kitchen and an aqua bathroom!

I love the blue and green combo, too much probably because they're colors I wear together a lot! these add are AWESOME! When I was going to college to be an architect I would sit in the library and flip through their old collection of magazines to look at ads like these!

and sadly you probably will have a numb spot on your finger (or not so sadly, if lets say you take up baking your own bread and need to tap it to check the sound to see if it's done!)

I have the pink bathroom and the floor in the second bathroom. I can't stand it. There is grime in my bathroom from the 50's, it doesn't matter how much I scrub I know it's there lurking under the tiles and between the cracks. As soon as I get a new roof I'm redoing it.

I'd love to go with any of those black and whites however.
