The Crazy Suburban Mom: Hey, New Jersey's not Ugly...

Hey, New Jersey's not Ugly...

I've been taking much better pictures lately. Not because of anything I'm doing but the camera is so much better. So much for the talent vs. equipment argument... Not that that is doing much for my self-esteem but whatevs...

I've decided to do a (regular) New Jersey Photo Feature because people seem to think NJ is um, ugly...and crowded. Go figure.

And I get it.

It's the 9th most populated state but only the 47th biggest. I'm guessing if those facts were reversed our car insurance rates would be a whole lot better. If you're wondering about that stat, NJ is always at (or near) the top of how much we pay for car insurance. The specific amount thousands of dollars and I'm so not kidding. That's if you have no accidents. If you have accidents the answer is many, many (many) thousands (if you can get insurance).

And for those of you who live in the big middle, square, low-densely populated states who think I'm just being funny about the thousands - No, I'm not kidding.

So yes, we have housing that looks like this....

Because we have, ya know, lots of people.... And things like this...

And more than our share of these...

The problem is people think that's all NJ is and miss the charm.

Mmmm, and this...

Don't forget Bruce (The Boss)

And c'mom.... This!

That might be the best picture I've ever taken.
And it was in NJ not Waikiki!

So I want to do something regular featuring lovely photographs
taken in NJ and call it... I don't know yet. Any ideas?

But the drive from New York to Newark Airport over the Pulaski Skyway....ahem....

Stan, You will get no arguement for me about that. Not NJ's finest hour... Parts of Newark are pretty nice (which would suprise a lot of people.) But that whole 'by the airport' thing. Ugh.

No arguement, not even trying to make a case :)

Well, I for one have never been to Jersey so I can't say anything about it. I do know that I read it was the Garden State (right?) and saw some beautiful private gardens online once. I've never forgotten that so it is the picture in my head when I think of Jersey. Oh and by the way although they have been here for years our neighbors (only house we can see up here in the woods) are originally from (him) NYC and her from Jersey. Guess I'm closer than I thought! LOL

Northern NJ is gorgeous too! And all the is a lovely place, and those are wonderful pictures.

My great grandmother used to live in Camden, though that was back in the 1860s so it probably looked quite different. Don't know what it is like now.

I get it, Tracy, I live in Chicago. Yeah, there is lots of ugly concrete, traffic, slums, and homeless bums begging on street corners--but there is some loveliness here too. I like your idea of Jersey Loveliness! I'm read for more photos. :)

Oh, if it is any consolation, insurance here is beastly too.

Lin, I think there is probably loveliness everywhere... But I probably have you beat on car insurance :)

Heidi - Yep, northern NJ can be downright rural. As for Camden - I don't what to say about Camden although chances are I won't be photographing it all that much. I think Camden had the highest crime rate - Not in the state - in the country.

Naida - That pic was from a concert - its the big screen you can actually see him on - the band is teeny tiny in the left bottom corner :)

Rain- yep, it is the garden state... :)
