Retro Tuesday All Week Long Salutes Betsy McCall Paper Dolls....

Last Day of Retro Tuesday All Week Long!

Tomorrow this blog will go back to regular and
Retro Tuesday will be confined to... well, Tuesdays...

The last bunch of magazines I got were some McCall's magazines from the 70's. I look at them the least. First off, they don't smell very good. Buying old magazines online is dicey. Good condition is sort of a value judgment and really I just want to scan them so if they smell musty I'm okay with that. But these passed musty in the 80's and I keep them on the porch.

And besides, I've been through them. There's not all that much I find fascinating....

Except these...

I remember the Betsy McCall paper dolls and her adventures. A friend's mom had a subscription and I was always at her house the day the magazine came. I never cut it out or anything, I just wanted to read the story and think about cutting it out. Collecting the Bestys, the outfits... and living vicariously through her.

I wanted her clothes...

A lot...

I grew up in New Jersey, half and hour from New York City, and going
to the Plaza for lunch (like in the Heloise book) ....

....was something a lot of girls did with their moms.... Betsy did it too.

Here she's holding the Heloise book in this great going-to-the-Plaza party dress!

Check out The Bleu Door for the history and many, many more of these.

oh my gosh, I played with these dolls! I was just talking with my sister about them last wee. Cutting the dolls out, folding the little tabs of the clothes over the little girl's body; I played for hours. I wonder if little girls do or would play with paper dolls today.

Thanks!

Wow! Blast from the past! My mom would buy McCall and I would play with those dolls for hours!

She was so adorable! Of course being from Montreal, we didn't lunch at the Plaza....We did lunch at HoJo's and Murray's!

Mama-Face - I don't know. There's something about them that's just compelling but than maybe that's because its part of my childhood and I get all nostalgic about them. Guess you could print them and see :)

Vonlipi - I never went to the plaza either :)

Very first Betsy pose... my sister used to do that with her feet for pictures.. always nearly falling on her face. She was a big Betsy fan.

Me, I just liked paper dolls, I didn't care who they were.

These are so cute. I don't remember these ones but I did love paper dolls. And real ones too.

I had completely forgotten about those dolls! What a great memory!

Oh, how I loved Betsy McCall. I think my Mom subscribed so I could have the dolls. I wish now that I had saved some! Yours seem to be in good shape.
